Is the Legal Risk of Building Information Modeling (BIM) Real or Imagined?

>PRWEB.COM Newswire

Washington, DC (PRWEB) May 19, 2011

WPL Publishing has scheduled a webinar to help construction professionals learn how to protect their organizations contractually from the risks and legal challenges that come with building information modeling (BIM).

BIM has the potential to reduce risks and costs throughout the entire facility life cycle. The webinar will discuss how an owner, architect, engineer, and contractor can work together throughout the process to manage contractual and legal risks that could land all parties in court. To register for the 90-minute event, slated for Thursday, May 26, 2011, at 1:00 p.m. (EDT), visit

The advent of BIM technology promises to improve the overall design systems for construction projects and is likely to become the dominant system for project design delivery. However, as BIM begins to blur the allocations of responsibility developed over many generations, it has become necessary for architects, engineers, contractors, owners, and developers to adapt their legal safeguards accordingly.

The full scope of BIM’s legal ramifications may take years to fully comprehend, but the most anticipated potential liabilities will be addressed during the webinar, entitled “The Legal Risk of BIM -- Real or Imagined?” Those include copyright and ownership questions, information management, control concerns, and other common issues. This interactive program will show webinar attendees how to do the following:

  • Learn who owns a final integrated design.
  • Understand who bears the cost of model management.
  • Recognize how the shift in terminology can create legal headaches.
  • Comprehend issues regarding insurability.
  • Protect organizations from the risks of software defects and failures.

Addressing attendees will be Michael De Chiara and Michael Vardaro, partners at Zetlin & De Chiara Llp. Mr. De Chiara is experienced in virtually all aspects of laws affecting the design and construction industry. In addition to litigation and contractual matters, he often advises clients on financial affairs and general business matters covering partnership law, corporate law, employment law, and professional practice matters, including ownership transition and licensing issues. Mr. Vardaro represents clients in complex commercial and construction litigation matters in various venues across the United States. He has extensive experience resolving claims through mediation as well as representing clients before administrative boards and arbitration panels.

Following their presentations, there will be an interactive 10-to-15 minute question-and-answer session addressing relevant topics.

Webinar tuition is based on location, not number of participants, so each registration site can have multiple participants for one low price. To register, visit
