The video shows a harrowing incident: the cyclist, going by the name Lucky Jakkals on YouTube and identified as Malcolm Fox, was cycling in a wooded area near Ongegund, South Africa, when a man ran up to him, pointing a gun in his face.
The cyclist immediately jumped off his bike and handed it to him. The robber then asked for his belongings, and the cyclist offered up his cellphone, car keys and sunglasses. The criminal looked at the cyclist’s helmet but didn’t seem to have a clue about GoPro, a wearable video camera.
When the bike-jacker is joined by another partner, they quickly run off with the bike while the cyclist walks the opposite direction.
The YouTube video has attracted almost 62,000 views since it was uploaded June 2.
The story ends with some good news: Western Cape police spokesman Andre Traut told the media two of the men were arrested on Sunday, and a third was apprehended Monday.
“Thorough investigation work led investigators to the suspects with the help of footage recorded with a camera which was mounted on the cyclist’s helmet. The first suspect aged 22 was arrested on Sunday at his residence in Sir Lowry’s Pass and a Luger firearm was seized. The same day another 22 year old suspect was arrested, also in Sir Lowry’s pass.”
Fox’s belongings were returned to him.
