Multinational Mobile Telecommunications Network Group Purchases 125 Imergy Flow Batteries for Communications Cell Sites in Africa

FREMONT, CA--(Marketwired - January 06, 2016) - Imergy Power Systems, a leader in advanced energy storage solutions, announced today that a South Africa-based multinational mobile telecommunications company that provides services to more than 200 million subscribers in Africa, Europe and the Middle East has purchased a further 105 Imergy ESP5™ vanadium flow batteries in addition to an original pilot of 20 systems, to provide backup power to base station sites in the country.

The Imergy ESP5 batteries will be installed at telecom base station throughout South Africa. The new batteries will replace diesel generators and lead-acid batteries, which were previously used to provide backup power to the cell sites.

Unlike the lead-acid batteries currently deployed at the base stations, the ESP5 batteries can be charged or discharged to any state of charge with minimal degradation and performance loss. This is a key advantage in South Africa, where unreliable or intermittent grid-provided power often quickly degrades lead-acid batteries. In addition, the ESP5's fast-charge capability will enable the new batteries to quickly recharge when grid power is available. New, higher energy tariffs will shortly be introduced at the peak time of use in the morning and afternoon, and the ESP5 will be able to operate in a demand shift mode, where cheaper energy can be stored at night and used in the peak time of use to reduce energy cost.

The ESP5 also:

  • Has no-secondary market value, unlike diesel fuel and lead-acid batteries, mitigating the risk of fuel and battery theft.
  • Features unlimited cycling capacity and requires little to no maintenance, increasing long-term returns on battery investment while lowering operation costs.
  • Can be easily integrated with photovoltaic solar power systems, which the telecommunications service provider is considering installing at a number of sites in its network.

The ESP5 offers 5 kilowatts of output power and an energy capacity ranging from 20 to 30 kilowatt hours. The batteries purchased for these projects will contain electrolyte produced in South Africa from locally-sourced vanadium, thus supporting local employment opportunities.

"As South Africa's struggling power utility battles to cope with growing demand for electricity, Imergy's vanadium flow batteries are providing a high quality, reliable power supply to meet the needs of the telecommunication industry in a cost-effective and sustainable way," said Imergy's CEO Bill Watkins. "Imergy's Energy Storage Systems' fast charge rates, unlimited cycling and durability in rugged, remote outdoor environments are the reason why customers like this mobile telecommunications network group are choosing them to help ensure uninterrupted power service to millions of customers."

Groundbreaking Storage

Imergy Power specializes in a proprietary, vanadium based flow battery system, the most cost-effective energy storage technology available today. Flow batteries essentially store energy in a liquid electrolyte that circulates between tanks. The simplicity of the design creates a robust and efficient system that can be cycled an unlimited number of times, and charged and discharged completely without impact on its lifespan. Integrated power electronics manage the charging and discharging processes, providing customers with a lower total cost of ownership (TCO) than other types of batteries. The unique architecture allows the system to be scaled up in size by simply increasing the electrolyte volumes. Imergy's ESP batteries also inherently last longer: while traditionally lithium ion batteries may have to be fully replaced every five to seven years, an ESP system needs only partial component replacements over 20 years or more of service.
