Facebook and HackerNest to Produce World's Foremost Hackathon to Help Those Affected by Dementia

TORONTO, ONTARIO--(Marketwired - Sept. 15, 2015) - Facebook and HackerNest partner to make a difference by running DementiaHack, the world's foremost hackathon dedicated to helping those affected by dementia. Supported by the UK government, the event will bring together some of the brightest, most dedicated minds in healthcare and technology to develop new and innovative products that improve the lives of people living with dementia and their caregivers.

"We will change the face of this condition globally," said Jordan Banks, DementiaHack's Chair and Managing Director of Facebook Canada. "Facebook's mission is to make the world more open and connected and that's exactly what we're doing with this challenge. We're connecting teams of technology innovators with leaders in the healthcare industry hungry to create and implement game-changing products and services."

Hosted at the new George Brown College Waterfront Campus in Toronto, Ontario, the event will run from November 7th to 9th, 2015. Approximately 300 participants comprised of technologists, health professionals, entrepreneurs and other motivated individuals will be mentored by technical, business and subject matter experts before and during the event.

"The World Health Organization estimates that over 47 million people live with dementia worldwide - 750,000 in Canada alone - with global numbers expected to reach 75 million by 2030," said Shaharris Beh, HackerNest's founder and CEO. "Significant funding and research goes towards the search for a cure that may or may not be decades away. The point of DementiaHack is to create products that impact lives today. The backing of highly visible partners like Facebook and the UK government help us to convey the immediacy and relevance of this reality."

Participants will compete for sizeable cash and non-cash prizes, business services, a demo spot at a major health conference and key meetings with industry decision-makers. Winners will have an opportunity to further their projects through business development tours in North America and the UK where they will meet with and demo their products to potential customers, partners, investors and acquirers as well as to healthcare workers serving those with dementia in nonprofit sectors.

Since 2010, the UK has emerged as a global leader in the fight against dementia. Aiming to become the best place in the world for dementia care and research by 2020, its advanced healthcare and technology sectors make it a natural destination for companies looking to innovate and grow. Supporting DementiaHack is one of the UK government's proactive responses to the increasing social and economic impacts of dementia.

All are welcome, but space is limited. Registration (deadline: November 4th, 2015) and information is available at Hashtag: #DementiaHack.
