Creighton Appoints Dr. Isabelle Cherney to Head New Program

Creighton University is proud to announce Isabelle Cherney, Ph.D., has been named the director of Creighton University’s online interdisciplinary Doctor of Education program in Leadership. The interdisciplinary program, which is only offered online, launched in January 2011.

The online interdisciplinary Ed.D. in Leadership program at Creighton seeks to build ethical, responsible and forward-thinking leaders for the future through Creighton’s Jesuit, Catholic tradition of social justice, self-reflection and service. This interdisciplinary program encourages students to take a socially and globally aware approach to instituting and leading changes that benefit all members of society, no matter what field they choose to work in.

Cherney’s career and accomplishments illustrate her own commitment to effective leadership. A native of Switzerland, she has been a full-time faculty member at Creighton since 2000 and is also the director of the Honors Program. She is an alumna of Creighton as well, having earned her bachelor’s degree in Psychology at the university, where she received the Leo R. Kennedy Award, given to the outstanding senior psychology major by the faculty of the psychology department.

She went on to earn a master’s in Psychology at the University of Nebraska at Omaha and a Ph.D. in Educational Psychology and Cultural Studies from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln. Her areas of interest and research focus on aspects of cognition, including the factors influencing cognitive sex differences and eyewitness memory, the development of gender stereotypes; children's perceptions of their rights, the link between anxiety and memory, and how anxiety affects performance. She has also started studying the satisfaction (or dissatisfaction) of children with their bodies.

Cherney’s accomplishments in psychology research and teaching are many. She is the author of Gendered Memory: Innate or Learned? An Evolutionary and Schematic Examination of Incidental and Intentional Memory of Males and Females (Lambert Academic Publishing AG & Co., 2010), and she has had articles published in many scholarly journals, including Active Learning, Sex Roles, Educational Psychology, and the Journal of Social Issues. Her long list of awards include Creighton’s College of Arts & Sciences Research Award (2008); the Teaching for Tomorrow Award, from Omicron Delta Kappa and the Society of Collegiate Scholars (2009), the Dean’s Award for Professional Excellence in Tenure-Track Teaching (2008), and being named Carnegie Foundation Nebraska Professor of the Year (2007).
