Mount Pleasant Retirement Village is excited to announce their partnership with the Scripps Gerontology Center of Miami University in their Opening Minds through Art (OMA) program.

OMA is an intergenerational art program for people with dementia. It is grounded in person-centered ethics and founded on the fact that people with dementia are capable of expressing themselves creatively. There is a growing body of empirical evidence that creative expression improves their physical and psychological well-being. The mission of OMA is to build bridges across age and cognitive barriers through art.

Blessed with a donation from the Middletown Community Fund, Denise Brown, Director of Nursing at Mount Pleasant was instrumental in bringing this program to her residents. Each week, more than a dozen residents have the opportunity to participate in the program with the assistance of our nursing staff and other volunteers.

"The residents we serve have fun and enjoy the individual attention they receive in the class," said Brown. "One resident even remarked, 'I feel like an artist.'"

About Opening Minds through Art
OMA was founded in 2007 by Dr. Lokon at the Scripps Gerontology Center at Miami University in Ohio. OMA annually serves 200 pairs of elders and volunteers. In 2011, OMA received the Best Practice Award from LeadingAge Ohio.
