Strengthens a long-standing commitment to responsible forestry and trade

POULSBO, WA.---The Magellan Group, Ltd. has formalized its commitment to responsible forestry and trade by joining the Global Forest & Trade Network in North America (GFTN), a World Wildlife Fund (WWF) initiative focused on eliminating illegal logging and promoting environmentally and socially responsible forest management.  As a GFTN participant, The Magellan Group joins a network of nearly two hundred companies across the globe that share a commitment to responsible forestry and trade.

"The Magellan Group has participated in numerous GFTN business roundtables and trade missions in Latin America in recent years," said Ross Yeager, managing partner and Resource Group Director of The Magellan Group.  "We are delighted that our engagement with GFTN has been formalized and offers the opportunity to build on our core commitment to growing the trade in responsible wood products through our participation."

The scope of The Magellan Group's GFTN participation includes globally-purchased wood decking, rainscreen, molding, millwork, doors and furniture components. Sixty percent of the wood sourced by The Magellan Group is Forest Stewardship Council (FSC)-certified.  The company currently is the largest stocking dealer of FSC-certified hardwood decking in the US.

The Magellan Group's global wood sourcing policy, a requirement for GFTN participants, includes voluntary goals, such as increasing FSC-certified wood purchases by 3% per year over the next three years. Additionally, The Magellan Group is committed to raising awareness among landowners, forest managers, the construction sector, and the broader public about the environmental and social benefits of FSC.

"Companies that seriously commit to responsible wood sourcing can have a significant positive impact on the world's forests," says Linda Walker, Director of GFTN-North America, WWF.  "By demonstrating leadership in committing to responsible sourcing and FSC certification, and through outreach to architects, specifiers and contractors, The Magellan Group can help to drive positive change for both the construction sector and our planet."

"We recognize the importance of educating the manufacturing sector and consumers about the positive impact that their wood purchasing decisions can have on forests, and have spent the last twenty  years working closely with our forest owners, sawmills, secondary plants, and customers," says Kevin Magraw, President and managing partner of The Magellan Group.  "We embrace FSC's principles of responsible forest management, proving that it can be done in today's highly competitive market."

The Network promotes responsible management of valuable and threatened forests in the Amazon, Amur-Heilong (Russia), Borneo, Sumatra, Congo, Mekong (Southeast Asia) and other areas where forests are threatened.

GFTN assists companies in evaluating their procurement and implementing appropriate action plans to ensure sustainable supply. By facilitating trade links between companies committed to responsible forestry, the GFTN creates market conditions that help conserve forests while providing economic and social benefits for the businesses and people that depend on them.
