100+ Local Communities Celebrate World Water Day with Rain Barrel Fundraisers

Canada NewsWire

HAMILTON, ON, March 18, 2014 /CNW/ - Water and Energy is the theme for World Water Day on March 22 as designated by the UN. The two are so closely related that conserving water conserves energy and vice versa.

100+ non-profit groups across Canada officially launch rain barrel sales on World Water Day. Along with advancing local causes, all recognize the need for and value of rain barrels in promoting a greener future for our communities.

Canadians can do their part to conserve water and energy by using a rain barrel. Rain barrels made of new, recycled or repurposed materials provide a free source of water, ideal for vegetables, plants, trees and lawns because it does not contain fluoride or chlorine, typically added to municipal drinking water. During outdoor watering restrictions, water from a rain barrel can wash vehicles or water lawns without incurring water-meter related charges. Having a source of stored water can also be beneficial if an emergency arises.
