Canada NewsWire

DELORO, ON, Nov. 30, 2013 /CNW/ - On behalf of the Honourable Julian Fantino, Minister of Veterans Affairs, Daryl Kramp, Member of Parliament for Prince Edward—Hastings, today announced funding for the construction of a war memorial in Deloro, Ontario. This announcement further supports the Government of Canada's ongoing efforts to engage Canadians in active remembrance from coast to coast and to bring attention to the great service and sacrifices of Canada's Veterans.

"Our Government is committed to encouraging Canadians, young and old, to remember and honour Veterans and the brave men and women in uniform who serve their country," said Minister Fantino. "Local war memorials acknowledge and reflect our appreciation for Veterans of current and past generations."

"Our Government is proud to work with community groups to build sacred monuments in communities across Canada," said MP Kramp. "These monuments are important symbols that capture a nation's heartfelt gratitude."

Canadian Communities Initiatives will receive up to $40,000 for the construction of the Deloro War Memorial. A new cenotaph will be erected to recognize those who served in the First World War, the Second World War and the Korean War and who fought so bravely using the munitions material mined and refined at the Deloro Mine. Six interpretive story boards will further highlight local wartime contributions.

Veterans Affairs Canada partners with community groups and non-profit organizations through three programs to further commemorate the courage and sacrifices of Veterans and men and women in uniform. These programs can support remembrance activities, and the restoration or construction of cenotaphs and monuments.
