Canada NewsWire

NORTH BAY, ON, June 21, 2013 /CNW/ - Jay Aspin, Member of Parliament for Nipissing—Timiskaming, on behalf of the Honourable Denis Lebel, Minister of Transport, Infrastructure and Communities, Minister of the Economic Development Agency of Canada for the Regions of Quebec, and Minister of Intergovernmental Affairs, today announced $299,892 in funding for two safety improvement projects at the North Bay Jack Garland Airport.

The North Bay Jack Garland Airport is receiving through the Airports Capital Assistance Program (ACAP), $299,892 for the replacement of a runway sweeper and the rehabilitation of a sand storage building.  The new sweeper will ensure the timely and effective removal of snow, slush and ice from runways and taxiways while the rehabilitated sand storage building will protect the sand used for ice control from moisture.

"The North Bay Jack Garland Airport is a vital gateway for local residents, businesses, trade and tourism," said MP Aspin. "This funding will enhance the safety of all those who use this airport, especially the communities and businesses in Northern Ontario."

"The North Bay Jack Garland Airport is an important part of our strategic economic plan to create growth and jobs for our region. This investment helps us to move forward as we build our great city," said Mayor Al McDonald. "This continued investment in our future will go a long way in helping us to be successful."

To date, through ACAP, the North Bay Jack Garland Airport has received more than $9 million for 17 projects, including today's announcement. Since the program started, the Government of Canada has invested more than $606 million for 751 projects at 174 airports. Improvements include purchasing/replacing heavy airside mobile equipment; installing wildlife fencing; and rehabilitating runway pavements, airfield lighting and electrical systems.

Canada's Economic Action Plan provides new opportunities for growth, job creation and long-term prosperity.  Thanks to the Government of Canada's leadership and our strong economic and financial fundamentals, the Canadian economy has recovered from the global recession better than most other industrialized countries.  Canada has been a leader among G-7 countries throughout the recovery with over one million net new jobs created since July 2009.
