SNHU Adds Health Communication Concentration to Master’s in Communication Online Degree

Healthcare policy and practice touches all Americans at some time in their lives. Yet levels of understanding of healthcare policy and healthcare choices—healthcare literacy, in other words—is low among the general population. Southern New Hampshire University seeks to address this challenge by adding a new health communication concentration to its Master of Arts in Communication online degree.
The SNHU master’s in Communication online degree consists of 12 courses (for 36 credits) taught by respected instructors from a range of relevant, contemporary communications disciplines. The degree’s coursework applies directly to real-world situations, creating a valuable education that is immediately transferrable. Consequently, a degree in the Health Communication concentration can potentially make an immediate impact as a healthcare communicator in the areas of public relations, health education, and advocacy.
“Healthcare consumers, like consumers of any goods or services, make better decisions and get better value when they understand their choices,” said Patrick Hayes, assistant dean for writing and communication programs at SNHU. “We envision the graduates from this program as tomorrow’s healthcare communication leaders. They’re the ones who’ll clarify difficult topics and correct erroneous assertions in social media. These communicators will play pivotal roles in improving healthcare literacy, thus quality and safety, across the globe.”
SNHU’s 100-percent online master’s in Communication degree with a Health Communication concentration comprises seven core courses, four electives and a final, comprehensive capstone course that rolls up the program’s coursework in an intensive, real-world exercise. The four health elective courses are eHealth and Technology, Health Communication and Culture, Healthcare Ethics, and Contemporary Public Policy and Strategy. Candidates can complete their degree in as few as 18 months.
SNHU expects healthcare marketing, communication and public relations professionals (non-practitioners) to find the new health concentration to be especially attractive. Graduates will be well prepared to create and build lasting, rewarding and impactful careers.
“An aging population plus the implementation of health reform add up to a long-term trend of healthcare job growth,” said Hayes. “Factor in the exponential growth of media—especially social media—and the need to educate and inform a diverse population about healthcare matters, and the ongoing need for outstanding healthcare communicators is clear. We created this SNHU master’s program with the goal of helping to meet that need. “
