Director of Creighton’s Health Care Ethics Programs Updates Influential Book

>PRWEB.COM Newswire

Omaha, NE (PRWEB) April 10, 2013

Creighton University is proud to announce the publication of the eighth edition of Health Professional and Patient Interaction. Written by Amy Haddad,Ph.D., the director of the University’s Center for Health Care Policy and Ethics (CHPE) at Creighton University, with co-authors Ruth Purtilo, Ph.D., and Regina Doherty, Ph.D., the book covers strategies for healthy and productive relationships between health professionals and patients.

The authors use practical examples and scenarios to illustrate respectful, ethical and professional interactions with patients of different ages, cultures and levels of impairment, as well as in the context of various practice settings. The new edition points users to a companion website that features slide presentations and test questions.

Sections introduce the patient’s point of view, encourage critical thinking and promote the use of personal experience. In this new edition, health care terminology has been updated and Doherty has added an occupational theory perspective.

Haddad and Purtilo first published Health Professional and Patient Interaction in 2007. Haddad is also, with Robert Veatch, Ph.D., the author of Case Studies in Pharmacy Ethics. In 2001 she was selected for the national Carnegie Scholars program of the Carnegie Center for the Advancement of the Scholarship of Teaching. As part of her project for the program, Haddad assessed various methods of teaching applied ethics. In addition to her post as director of the Center for Health Policy and Ethics (CHPE), she is also the Mabel L. Criss Endowed Chair in the Health Sciences.

The book expands upon themes discussed in a course in the University’s online Master of Science in Health Care Ethics curriculum, “Practical Ethics in Health Care Settings,” which outlines the use of deliberative methods to approaching patient interactions in clinical settings. “Respectful interaction across the lifespan with patients, their support systems, and interprofessional care teams is the foundation of clinical ethics,” Haddad noted. The master’s and certificate programs in Health Care Ethics are housed within CHPE, which emphasizes the Jesuit values of social justice and human rights, with an emphasis on vulnerable and marginalized populations. Courses are taught by the center’s faculty, all of who hold the highest degree in their field.

Students in the program gain the expertise to feel confident about ethical decisions in difficult situations as well as to educate others in this challenging field. Coursework emphasizes practical ethics in health care settings, including typical responsibilities of institutional ethics committees. A practicum gives students the opportunity to apply what they have learned, which they will also use to create a scholarly product at the close of the program. Students can complete the master’s program in 18 months and the certificate program in less than a year. Both are offered in the convenient online format, allowing working adults to expand their knowledge in this developing area with minimal impact on their work and personal obligations.
