Money-Saving Site for Parents Launches 30 Min Parent Pledge
London, UK (PRWEB UK) 25 February 2013
According to a recent survey from the money-saving website, MyFamilyClub.co.uk, nearly 70% of parents spend less than 10 quality hours with their kids a week. Half of UK mums claim they don’t spend enough quality time with their kids due to the pressures of work and domestic chores and yearn to spend time with their children the way they used to.
The research also revealed that mums are desperate to spend more time with their children and share activities they once enjoyed as a child. Thirty-nine percent of parents stated that going for a walk was their favourite activity when they were small, and going for a walk also proved to be the UK’s most-loved family activity in 2013, closely followed by reading. However parents’ least favourite activity was helping children with their homework and playing video games.
Influential clinical psychologist, author, journalist and TV presenter, Oliver James, believes children need lots of quality parental time to ensure they thrive. His latest book is Love Bombing – Reset your child’s emotional thermostat. Oliver says: “The evidence is overwhelming that children, especially when under-three but at least until aged 7, want just to hang out with parents and play. Small children are living in a wonderful la-la land of their own making and their greatest desire is for parents to join them there. Of course, they also want to feel loved and secure.”
To help parents get a better quality of life in 2013, money-saving site MyFamilyClub is launching the 30 Minute Parent Pledge. The goal is to get mums and dads to open up their diaries and make special time for their kids without breaking the bank.
Gemma Johnson is a mum of two and CEO, MyFamilyClub, she explains: “As parents, we all lead busy lives and finding time to do something different with the kids can be tough, and it can also be pricey. This year we want parents to make a date in their diary for their kids. We want to encourage the nation to put away their purses and wallets and instead pledge at least 30 minutes of their time doing something different with their children, such as riding a bike or taking a walk in the woods.”
Getting the work life balance right has often been hard to achieve for working parents, but these statistics reveal that more families than ever are finding it hard to spend quality time together due to pressures of the workplace. Families also see money as a major barrier to family days out, which is unsurprising when a family ticket for four to Alton Towers costs £64! In December 2012 ONS Family Spending Survey, revealed that families spend £63.90 a week on recreation and culture. MyFamilyClub money-saving site wants to get families to get back to basics and remember that going for a walk, reading a book or playing cards is free. Oliver James continues: “The 30 minute parent pledge is a great initiative, a chance to provide a brief burst of the Love Bombing that can reset a child’s emotional thermostat”.

MyFamilyClub is her answer to this; her aim with this money-saving site is to help families gain a better quality of life by helping them to save money and free up more time to enjoy family life.
Oliver James and Love Bombing
Oliver James trained as a child clinical psychologist. He has presenting three series of parenting programmes on ITV’s This Morning.
Love Bombing (LB for short), his latest book, puts the child in charge and enables it to feel loved. It helps parents understand what the child needs and changes the whole trajectory of the relationship. Whether the problem is mild, like shyness or underperformance at school, or whether extreme, like temper tantrums, hyperactivity or even Asperger’s Syndrome, LB can make a huge difference.
“Because so many parents have periods of living very busy, or miserable or complicated lives, most of us need to reconnect with our children from time to time,” says Oliver James. “Love Bombing does the job”. He adds “The success with LB is that it doesn’t only reset your child’s emotional thermostat but helps the parents learn, or re-learn, to understand their child’s emotional needs. It is something much more than just ‘quality time’, LB creates a zone where the child can be a toddler again, but this time it feels safe, valued and in control.”
Oliver James is a trustee of the Alzheimer’s charity, He works as a writer, journalist broadcaster and television documentary producer and presenter. He lives in Oxfordshire with his wife and two young children.
