SmartDebit responds to introduction of electronic toll fee added to The Golden Gate Bridge

>PRWEB.COM Newswire

(PRWEB UK) 16 February 2013

The current system at the Golden Gate Bridge is set to change as toll workers are replaced with automatic toll machines. The new scheme will begin in March as motorists are forced to use a cashless method to pay in a bid to cut costs. Motorist will be required to pay online by debit or credit card after they have passed over the bridge. Number plate recognition systems will be used as cameras identify number plates and link them to registered owners with the state Department of Motor Vehicles. The charge will be $6 for the pay by plate method.

In addition, motorists can make a one off payment which can be made up to 30 days before passing through the toll, by telephone or in participating retail outlets where cash will be accepted.

Dietrich Stroeh, bridge board member added, “It looks all smooth at this point, a lot will have to do with communication to the public. We don’t want people stopping at the toll plaza. There will be a lot of signage.”

SmartDebit, a leading UK payments processor commented, “The cashless system on the bridge will save time for motorists and is more convenient than having to find loose change. The recent change is the latest in a series of moves towards a cashless society by governments worldwide. The UK has seen the similar systems introduced with pay by phone parking and automated toll booths on bridges such as the Queen Elizabeth II and the removal of existing barriers at the Dartford crossing due in 2014.”

SmartDebit continues to follow global payment industry updates.
