article imageWestboro Baptist Church founder, Fred Phelps, near death

By Greta McClain     Mar 16, 2014 in World
Topeka - The controversial Fred Phelps Sr, founder of Westboro Baptist Church and "God Hates Fags", is reportedly near death in a hospice facility in Topeka, Kansas.
Phelps is perhaps best known for picketing military funerals, especially funeral services for service members killed in Afghanistan and Iraq. Before becoming an ordained minister and starting Westboro Baptist Church, Phelps was a well known, award winning civil rights attorney. He was disbarred in 1979 after he was accused of calling a witness a "slut" and accusing her of a variety of perverse sexual acts.
News of Phelps' health surfaced early this morning when his estranged son, Nathan Phelps, posted on Facebook:
I've learned that my father, Fred Phelps, Sr., pastor of the "God Hates Fags" Westboro Baptist Church, was ex-communicated from the "church" back in August of 2013. He is now on the edge of death at Midland Hospice house in Topeka, Kansas.
I'm not sure how I feel about this. Terribly ironic that his devotion to his god ends this way. Destroyed by the monster he made.
I feel sad for all the hurt he's caused so many. I feel sad for those who will lose the grandfather and father they loved. And I'm bitterly angry that my family is blocking the family members who left from seeing him, and saying their good-byes.
According to the Kansas City Star, Phelps' granddaughter, Megan Phelps-Roper, has declined to comment on her grandfather's condition, and staff at the hospice facility state they cannot release any information due to health care privacy laws.
However, the Topeka Capital Journal reports a church spokesman has confirmed that Phelps is in a hospice facility with "unspecified health problems".
