It what may be the world's strangest wedding ceremony, an Indian girl has been forced to marry a dog in order to ward off evil spirits.
Tribal elders in a remote village in Jharkhand, India accused 18-year-old Mangli Munda of bringing bad luck to the village. The elders believed the bad luck was due to Mangli being inhabited by evil spirits. According to Santhal tribe customs, if a girl marries a dog, the evil spirits possessing her will be passed on to the dog.
Mangli's father, Sri Amnmunda, was ordered to organize the wedding by tribal elders, saying:
"The village elders told us that we should organize the wedding as soon as we can. We had to make sure that the evil spell is destroyed. And marrying a dog is the only way to get rid of the bad luck."
In an elaborate ceremony, both Mangli and her "groom," a stray dog named Sheru, underwent traditional Hindu wedding rituals. Mangli wore a red, gold and white dress and a red and gold scarf over her head, while Sheru arrived to the ceremony in chauffeur-driven car. Mangli's mother admitted that the ceremony was costly, but believes it was well worth the money, saying:
"Apart from the fact that the groom is a dog, we followed all customs. We respect the dog as much as we would respect a normal groom. We have to spend money on this wedding. That is the only way we can get rid of her bad luck and ensure the benevolence of the village."
Mangli was not at all happy about being forced to marry a dog, but she too believes it is the only way to stop the bad luck plaguing her and her village.
Mangli's new "husband" will now be treated as household pet, and Mangli will be allowed to marry the man of her dreams someday. She told the International Business Times:
"I will marry a man one day. It is the dream of every girl to marry a prince charming. So I am also waiting for my prince."
