article imageVideo: The chilling physical effects of poverty in 30 seconds

By Anne Sewell     Dec 23, 2013 in World
The stress of poverty can literally change our appearance. "Manos Unidas" (joined hands), a Catholic organization providing aid to Third World countries, has produced a campaign highlighting just how poverty can etch itself into our faces.
The above video shows in chilling detail how the stress of poverty can affect a person's appearance. We see an attractive young woman, gradually developing lines of stress and hardship, and aging by about 20 or more years in front of our eyes.
"Manos Unidas" (website in Spanish) created the video as a part of their campaign to highlight the severity and problems caused by poverty.
A Spanish actress, Inma Cuesta, stars in the video titled "The effects of poverty", a 30 second introduction into how poverty can blemish her face and completely change her appearance.
As she stares blankly at the camera she says quietly: “Life passes by for all of us, but it doesn't pass by in the same way for everyone.”
The video ends with a slogan which translates to: “Hunger, sickness, exploitation, injustice: They all leave their mark.”
The early-aging caused by all these effects, are currently being felt by 842 million people in the world. Unemployment of course plays a huge part in this too.
The number of unemployed is not just another number, but endless, heartbreaking stories of social crisis. Joblessness has harmful effects on the emotional aspect and unemployment is a problem of society as a whole, not just those experiencing it.
Ignacio Ussia, spokesperson for the Catholic organization spoke to Huffington Post's Spanish language version, pointing out that the effects of poverty are not just localized but worldwide:
“Keeping in mind how hard it is nowadays to get people to think about poverty outside of our [Spain's] borders, we thought it fitting and necessary to show how poverty can affect any one of us.”
“The life we live leaves a mark on our physical appearance and our faces reflect our own personal stories.”
Above is a thirty-second video that tells it all in striking and absolutely chilling clarity.
