article imageUS studying plans to rescue Americans from Olympics terrorists

With looming verbal threats having been expressed by militants, the United States has been planning ways of evacuating Americans, in the event of terrorist attacks during the Winter Olympics in Sochi, Russia,
The Huffington Post reported American officials have decided such an evacuation would face major obstacles, including starting a large-scale effort by the military, according to a source familiar with debates within the administration of President Barack Obama.
The biggest obstacle American officials believe they would face as far as contingency plans for Sochi is Russian authorities do not want to allow foreign military forces. This especially includes American military forces.
American officials agree and say Russia is primarily responsible for protecting everyone, including Americans. The Sochi Games begin February 7.
"No matter what happens," the Russians "are not going to welcome with open arms" intervention by any outsiders, officials reported. This is true, even if the outsiders only want to rescue their citizens from harm, the source commented.
American contingency planners reportedly believe there are some ways to position and prepare supplies or forces for a possible rescue.
Sochi is on the western edge of the Caucasus mountains on the Black Sea in southern Russia. Militants trying to form an Islamist state in the area have threatened attacks on the Sochi Games.
The Guardian reported the United States State Department has warned citizens going to the Games to be cautions because of potential attacks.
American officials believe any attacks would be at somewhere other than Sochi, because the city is so heavily protected.
Russian President Vladimir Putin reportedly has staked his political and personal prestige on the success of the Olympics, has ordered increased safety measures throughout the country, after 34 people were killed last month in bombings in Volgograd, in southern Russia. There is a force of about 37,000 Russian guarding the Sochi area.
Putin, in an interview, said Russia will do "whatever it takes" to make the Games safe for the public and athletes.
He was asked if he was concerned about attacks in other parts of his country. Putin, through a translator replied, "We have adequate needs available to us through the federal security service, the interior ministry, armed forces units that will be involved in providing security on the water and in the air."
The Sporting News reported a video was released Sunday which claims recent terrorist bombings in the southern Russian city of Volgograd last month happened due to security forces in the region.
The video shows two Russian-speaking men in front of black banners with Arabic verses. The verses warned Putin that if the games are held, "We will give you a present for the innocent Muslim blood being spilled all around the world."
