The United States Marine Corps are investigating after pictures of soldiers burning bodies in Iraq have appeared online.
According to, 41 pictures were obtained that date back to 2004 in Fallujah. The pictures show soldiers burning the bodies of Iraqi insurgents and while some are posted on the TMZ website, many are too graphic to show.
A Marine spokesman confirmed that the occurrences are being investigated after TMZ handed the pictures over to the Pentagon. The spokesman added that there could be a rational explanation for the soldier's actions. ABC News stated that according to Col. Steve Warren, bodies are disposed of by burning them in rare cases where the corpses have been present for quite some time and pose hygienic risks.
In early 2012, a video surfaced online that shows Marines urinating on corpses of Taliban members in Afghanistan. Three Marines plead guilty to desecrating remains. Penalties included confinement, loss of rank, fines, and forfeits of pay.
