New York City - Three men are being hailed as heroes after they jumped on the tracks at a New York subway station to rescue an unconscious man who had become ill and fallen off the platform.
The dramatic incident occurred around 2:30 p.m. on Friday at the City Hall subway station. A man in his 50s or 60s became ill and fell onto the tracks. He was unconscious.
Three good Samaritans then jumped on the tracks to rescue him. As soon as they jumped down, Sumeja Tulic, a journalism student at CUNY, began recording what was happening. According to Tulic, the three men did not hesitate to jump on the tracks to save the man's life.
The video shows one of the men picking up the unconscious man's property and putting it on the platform. Then the three lifted the man up and put him on the platform with the assistance of other men who were at the edge of the platform. The three then managed to get back onto the platform, again with the assistance of others. The video ends with the good Samaritans standing around appearing to help the unconscious man.
NBC reports Tulic said the rescuers were allowed to stay with the man but everyone else was asked to leave the area. She described what happened as a "melting pot of goodness."
An R train entered the station about two minutes later. Around that time the man who had fallen began to regain consciousness. He was taken to Bellevue Hospital where his condition was described as serious but non-life-threatening.
This was the second similar incident to occur in the New York subway system in less than a month. At the end of May, a man who appeared to be ill began to stagger and then fell onto the tracks. A 19-year-old man jumped down but was unable to lift the man up because he was too heavy. A train was entering the station at the time but the teen managed to roll the unconscious man under the platform to avoid being hit by the train. That man was also taken to Bellevue with a broken arm.
Despite the heroics displayed in these incidents, the Metropolitan Transit Authority (MTA) advises passengers to never go on the tracks for any reason. If they drop something on the tracks, they should notify a police officer or a transit employee. And if someone is on the tracks, people should run to the end of the platform where the trains enter and signal the driver to stop.
