Two killed in California campus shooting: police

-

Two people were reported shot on Wednesday at the University of California's Los Angeles campus which was placed on lockdown as police searched for an active shooter.

"We have two victims," police spokesman Aareon Jefferson told AFP, adding that officers were searching the sprawling campus for an armed gunman. "The situation is very fluid."

He said it was unclear if the victims were students or staff at the school.

Jefferson said the shooting was reported shortly before 10 am in Boelter Hall, which is part of the school of engineering.

Dozens of police cars and tactical response teams rushed to the campus and ordered all students and staff to shelter in place.

Federal agents also rushed to the area.

Authorities urged people to avoid the area around the campus. A nearby elementary school was also placed on lockdown.

The university has some 43,000 students enrolled at the massive campus, according to its website.
