Officers responded to the call as they normally would, said Holden, “And when they got there, this person was still firing at officers and unfortunately some have been wounded.” One suspect in the shooting is down and it is not known for sure how many more suspects are involved.
Fox News is reporting that a witness told local station WBRZ-TV, a man who was dressed in black with his face covered was shooting indiscriminately when he walked out from between a convenience store and car wash across from Hammond Air Plaza.
CNN News reports that Louisiana Governor John Bel Edwards says the attack on the police officers is not just an attack against law enforcement but an attack against all of us, also suggesting the attack was well planned beforehand.
The city has seen protests since the death of Alton Sterling , 37, who was shot and killed July 5 as he wrestled with two white police officers outside the convenience store in a Baton Rouge, La., suburb where he sold music and movies on compact discs. Police say he was armed.
The injured police officers have been transported to Our Lady of the Lake hospital guarded by policemen armed with long guns wearing bulletproof vests, according to a media report.
Information is still coming in and is sure to change as the day goes on. Reports are now saying that from four to seven police officers have been wounded in the attacks.
