Speedwell - Emergency officials in Tennessee are going door to door in Claiborne County, searching for possible victims after strong storms ripped through the area.
Severe storms and a possible tornado has devastated much of the Doakes Creek area of Lafollette in Campbell county, approximately 48 miles north of Knoxville, TN. Officials told WATE some 20-30 homes were severely damaged, however no injuries or deaths have been reported thus far.
In the neighboring community of Speedwell, 10 homes were completely destroyed by the strong storms, including the home of the county sheriff. Office of Emergency Management spokesperson Gina Breeding told the Associated Press that the sheriff and his wife had to take refuge in their basement as the storm ravaged their home. Luckily, neither were injured.
Seven counties in the area experienced torrential rainfall, hail and strong winds which

knocked down trees and caused numerous power outages. Authorities are having difficulty getting to some of the hardest-hit areas due to trees littering the roadways, however officials have begun door-to-door searches to try to locate anyone who may have been injured in the storms. Dean Flener with the Tennessee Emergency Management Agency said Tennessee Highway Patrol strike teams have been deployed in in some counties, closing off roads and preventing people from wandering in damaged areas.
Although local radar indicated rotating winds in the storms, it is unclear if the damage was caused by a tornado or by strong straight-line winds. Officials plan to survey the damage tomorrow to determine the cause of the devastation.
