Gainsville, GA teenager, Sam Sartain, was riding an ATV in August 2013 when he lost control. The ATV flipped and landed on Sam's leg, causing severe damage. Surgeons had to amputate a portion of his leg immediately following the accident. Unfortunately complications arose and after several additional surgeries, nearly half of Sam's leg had to be removed. The numerous surgeries took their toll on Sam and he became so thin he required a feeding tube.
After several months, Sam recovered and was fitted with a prosthetic leg, beginning the process of adjusting to his condition and returning to school. Sam, who is a baseball player, received support from his fellow students. He told the Daily Mail
'It’s cool because when I went back to school, not only did I have that respect as a person, but as an athlete too."
Although Sam appeared to be adjusting to life with a prosthetic leg, his mother Judy thought he could use a companion. Last month Judy happened upon a Facebook post
by the Dachshund Rescue South Florida. The post was about a dog named Pooh. Pooh had been hit by a car which caused a deep laceration on his right leg that included a de-gloving injury to his back paw. He also suffered a compound fracture of the leg.
Although Pooh was severely injured, the staff at Dachshund Rescue South Florida was determined to get him the help he desperately needed. Just two days after posting Pooh's story on a fundraising site
, the rescue was able to raise the $5000 needed to save Pooh.
After reading Pooh's story, Judy felt he would be the perfect friend for Sam. She told NBC Miami
“As a mom you search for any resources that can help and animals are very therapeutic and they give you a reason to get up. It’s time to get up, it’s time to take the dog out, time to feed the dog. They give you unconditional love.”
Judy told Sam about Pooh and the teen fell in love with Pooh before they had even met. Sam even worried how Pooh would understand the phantom pains that are common when someone loses a limb. Judy and Sam decided they had to meet Pooh and made the 700 mile trip to Weston, FL to meet him.
As fate would have it, both Sam and Pooh lost their right leg to vehicle accidents, which may explain the instant connection and bond the two have developed. When Pooh and Sam met for the first time, Pooh went straight to Sam after seeing him. Sam recalls moment, saying
“He looked at me and he realized I guess that we had the same situation and he immediately ran over towards me.”
