Reclining seat argument causes yet another flight diversion

The latest incident involves Delta Airlines Flight 2370, scheduled to fly from LaGuardia Airport in New York to Palm Beach International Airport in Florida.

The drama went down Monday night, when passenger Amy Caryn Fine, 32, was trying to rest her head on the tray table in front of her. The woman sitting in front of her tried reclining her seat, and that’s when Fine got loud.

“This woman who was sitting next to me knitting actually tried reclining her seat back and the woman behind her started screaming and swearing and the flight attendant came over and that just exacerbated what was going on, and then she demanded that the flight land,” said Aaron Kiplin, a witness to the scene.

When flight attendants came over to try and calm Fine down, she apparently continued to be loud and disruptive and demanded that the pilot land the plane. The flight finally diverted to Jacksonville, Fla,, “due to safety reasons in regard to a passenger issue.”

Fine was escorted off the plane by police, taken to the airport’s rental car centre and released without incident. She said in the police report that she was very emotional due to the death of two of her dogs.

This is the third incident in a week of flights being diverted due to arguments over reclining seats. The first story came from a New Jersey-Colorado flight, in which a passenger used an illegal “Knee Defender” to prevent a passenger in front of him from reclining the seat. That flight was diverted to Chicago’s O’Hare airport and the two passengers were escorted off the plane.

Incident number two occurred mere days later, on a flight from Miami to Paris. This time, a man became angry and wouldn’t stop complaining when a woman in front of him reclined her seat. When an airline employee tried to calm him down, the man allegedly followed the employee and grabbed his arm. The flight was diverted to Logan International Airport in Boston, where an air marshal handcuffed the man, who now faces federal and state charges of interfering with flight crew.
