article imageUPDATE: Powerful earthquake rocks El Salvador, 1 confirmed dead

Chirilagua - The United States Geological Survey (USGS) is reporting that a powerful earthquake has struck the coastal area of El Salvador .
The earthquake, which registered 7.4 on the Richter scale, struck 64 kilometers (40 miles) off the southern coast between the borders of Guatemala, Nicaragua and El Salvador at approximately 10:52 local time (3:52 GMT). The epicenter of the quake is approximately 35 miles south of the El Salvador city of Chirilagua. The quake reportedly occurred around 70 km underground according to CBS San Francisco. Deeper quakes typically result in less damage than shallow quakes occurring 0 to 64 km.
The El Salvadorian General Directorate of Civil Protection has issued a Tsunami warning, urging residents along the coast to head for higher ground.
According to El Universal, the powerful quake was not only felt throughout much of El Salvador, but also in Nicaragua and as far away as Chiapas, located in the southern tip of Mexico.

It could also be felt in Honduras and Costa Rica.
The last earthquake of this size to strike El Salvador was in January of 2001. That quake, which registered as 7.7 magnitude earthquake, devastated parts of the country, killing 852 people USGS.
No injuries have been reported at this time, however damage associated with the earthquake is still being assessed at this time according to La Late News.
UPDATE 12:31 a.m. CST
Jorge Melendez, director of the General Directorate of Civil Protection, has confirmed one person has been killed after the quake knocked down a utility pole.
UPDATE 12:56 a.m. CST
Will Salgado, mayor of San Miguel, El Salvador, reports that several homes have been damaged by the quake, along with walls of some buildings collapsing and large cracks appearing in the walls at the San Juan de Dios Hospital in San Miguel.
