article imagePhoto Essay: Hotels in China Special

By Lonna Lisa Williams     Jun 2, 2014 in World
China has many cities, and each has a certain sense of style that is reflected in hotels ranging from traditional Chinese to Japanese to Western.
My first view of Chinese hotels was in Hong Kong where I stayed at the modest Evergreen Hotel and toured the fancy InterContinental by Hong Kong Bay. In Beijing, I stayed a night at a rather seedy airport hotel but also indulged in the five-star Beijing International Hotel and the Japanese-style "Hotel New Otani Chang Fu Gong," where I enjoyed a modern suite. Both of these hotels are located near the main Beijing train station. I spoke at a "C-Trip" travel conference inside the Marriott City Wall hotel, which is also near the train station. C-Trip is one of China's most popular websites to book airline flights, tours, and hotels.
In the northeast province of Jilin where I teach English, the Continental Garden Hotel offers more traditional design and wedding salons while Jilin's newest hotel (and tallest building), "The World Trade Winning Hotel," shows off its modern flair blended with old style.
I think hotels are like a taste of heaven—a place where people take care of me, I can relax, and there are lots of rooms and hallways to explore. I can dine in exotic restaurants near fountains or fish tanks, browse through sparkling shops filled with native art, and swim in crystal pools. Of course, when I check-out and pay the bill, I realize my stay was not so heavenly. But I have photos to remind me of the rest I took from everyday routines. Have fun touring, with me, a variety of hotels in China.
