Oregon State Police: Shooting at college, 10 dead, 20 injured

According to CNN News, 10 people have been killed and at least 20 people were wounded. The school is on lockdown and people are being asked to avoid the area.

Mercy Medical Center, the main hospital in the area says they are expecting an unknown number of wounded. Roseburg is located in southwestern Oregon, with the college about six miles north of the city. The college has 16 buildings and there are about 3,300 full-time students and 16,000 part-time students.

Preliminary reports are saying the shooter has been detained, but this has not been confirmed. Although the scene is not yet considered to be secure, it is still unknown if the shooter was working alone. Students are being told to remain behind locked doors, sheltering in place.

A county official just notified CNN that the shooter has been detained, the scene is now secure and is no longer an active shooter scene. He added that officers are going from building to building, making sure no one else has been hurt.

Now that the incident is over, investigations will begin, with many questions to be answered. Was this a lone shooter, or an act of terrorism? How many weapons were used, and more importantly, how did the gunman get hold of them. This story will be the center of news for the next several days as everyone tries to make sense of another tragedy.

NBC News is reporting that at least one female was shot in the chest. A press conference is expected to start within the hour. Further updates on this evolving story will be posted as more information is made available.

We are deeply saddened to announce the passing of our dear friend Karen Graham, who served as Editor-at-Large at Digital Journal. She was 78 years old. Karen's view of what is happening in our world was colored by her love of history and how the past influences events taking place today. Her belief in humankind's part in the care of the planet and our environment has led her to focus on the need for action in dealing with climate change. It was said by Geoffrey C. Ward, "Journalism is merely history's first draft." Everyone who writes about what is happening today is indeed, writing a small part of our history.
