Op-Ed: The Bilderberg conference and conspiracy theories

The Bilderberg Group was established back in 1954 and holds an annual conference of from 120 to 150 of the global elite in industry, acedemia, finance, politics, and the media. About two thirds of the group are from Europe and the rest from North America. The original conference was a Dutch initiative designed to bring together leaders from the United States and European countries with the aim of promoting better understanding between America and European countries and also to promote co-operation on political, economic and defense issues.

The conferences now go far beyond these issues although they are no doubt still part of the aim. In spite of the secrecy surrounding the conference, the group does list all the participants here. They also have a list of topics that will be discussed. There is a website that gives the background, composition, aim and process of the meetings: Founded in 1954, Bilderberg is an annual conference designed to foster dialogue between Europe and North America…The conference is a forum for informal discussions about megatrends and major issues facing the world. The meetings are held under the Chatham House Rule, which states that participants are free to use the information received, but neither the identity nor the affiliation of the speaker(s) nor of any other participant may be revealed. There is no detailed agenda, no resolutions are proposed, no votes are taken, and no policy statements are issued.
There are 140 participants in this year’s conference most from NATO nations.

Topics to be discussed are wide-ranging, from Artificial Intelligence and Cybersecurity to NATO, Russia, and Greece. Also included are the USA and U.S. Elections and for good measure, terrorism. Canada is represented by at least four participants, mostly from the financial sector. The CEO of the Royal Bank Group together with a retired CEO of the TD Bank represent banks but there is also Heather Blum, chair of the Canada Pension Plan Investment Board. Representing the media elite is Andrew Coyne of the National Post.

Given the secrecy of the Bilderberg Conferences, it is not surprising that they provide ample opportunity for speculation as to what is happening at these meetings. Some on the left as well as the right see the group as part of a larger conspiracy: Some on the left accuse the Bilderberg group of conspiring to impose capitalist domination,[45] while some on the right have accused the group of conspiring to impose a world government and planned economy.[46] Given the lack of any detailed agenda many speculate as to the real agenda. Here is Paul Joseph Watson giving his view of the real agenda of the meeting:

He has Twitter reports on the meetings here.
Watson reports on Alex Jones Infowars that has many articles on the Bilderberg meeting. Alex Jones is himself perhaps one of the best known U.S. conspiracy theorists. He thinks that the Bilderberg Conferences are involved in planning the New World Order. Jones has a second website that also carries extensive coverage of the Bilderberg meetings. Consider this video on You Tube of interviews with Austrians in the nearest town to the conference site:

Jones sometimes travels to cover Bilderberg meetings and was stopped by Canadian authorities when he tried to attend a conference in Ottawa. Jones was surprisingly mild in his response to the incident: On June 8, 2006, while on his way to cover a meeting of the Bilderberg group in Ottawa, Canada, Jones was stopped and detained at the Ottawa airport by Canadian authorities who confiscated his passport, camera equipment and most of his belongings. He was later allowed to enter Canada lawfully. Jones said regarding the reason for his immigration hold: “I want to say, on the record, it takes two to tango. I could have handled it better.”

On the left, Fidel Castro is a fan of Daniel Estulin, also a Bilderberg conspiracy theorist. Estulin is shown on the appended video in an interview on the Alex Jones TV show about the 2012 Bilderberg meetings. Castro called Estulin’s book Los secretos del club Bilderberg published in 2006 a fantastic story. In a December 2007 interview on the Alex Jones Show, Estulin claimed that he had information from inside US intelligence sources that people from the highest levels of the US government were considering an assassination attempt against Congressman Ron Paul because of his soaring popularity. Apparently plots against Paul are continuing as the Alex Jones Infowars channel reports that there was a later assassination scheme emanating from none other than a Bilderberg Conference.
