article imageOp-Ed: Justice for children killed by measles vaccine in Pakistan

By Ernest Dempsey     Jun 16, 2014 in World
Peshawar - Parents are refusing vaccination for measles in Pakistan after measles vaccine killed a number of children and caused many others to faint. Is there any hope for justice for those killed by the vaccine?
The deadly myth of “safe vaccine” was exposed a week ago like never before when at least seven children died soon after they were vaccinated for measles in the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province in Pakistan. Now, finally shaken out of their ignorance, parents and communities have started refusing vaccination for measles. But is there any hope of justice for those innocent lives seized by the vaccinators?
It’s been a week since I posted an article on Word Matters! quoting two leading English dailies — Express Tribune and Dawn as sources — and the latest story posted on Express Tribune still doesn’t give the exact figures of children that fell dead immediately or soon after the vaccine was administered; nor do we see the exact number of children affected throughout the province or the country. This is in stark contrast to the exact number of polio cases reported when a story emphasizing the importance of vaccination is published.
So what caused the deaths? The officials, who make money from such campaigns, are refusing the inherent risk of measles vaccine and provide “explanations” to make sense of these deaths. “Improper storage, its low quality and unskilled technicians” were some of the reasons an official, who was not named by the paper, mentioned. Naturally then the question is who will investigate this case to the core and hold the culprits accountable?
Even a bigger question is who is the culprit in such cases? Is it one person or agency or a system of profiteers? This measles vaccine, for example, was manufactured by some Indian pharma, approved by the World Health Organization (WHO), and procured and administered by Pakistan’s government — and all of them secure their share of money, down to the very last lady health visitor who is just taught how to put drops in a child’s throat or give an injection. Who responsibility is it in the end? I’ll say all of them. And being the prime stakeholder, it is the WHO that secures billions of dollars from the UN in vaccination projects.
When a civilian poisons someone to death, in a country like Pakistan, he/she would be punished with death or several years of imprisonment. But when officials poison children and kill them as well as affect them in other ways (remember dozens of children fainted and who knows how their health will be affected in the long run), they get away with it. They deny, procrastinate, and tuck under the rug these cases which are as bad as murder. Yet the killers always get away because they hold offices.
