Co-pilot Andreas Lubitz said: ‘I will be remembered forever’

The former girlfriend, known only as ‘Mary W’, shared the startling revelation with German newspaper Bild.

She said to Bild that Lubitz wanted to ‘change the entire system’ by doing something that meant ‘all will know my name and remember it.’

She also commented to Bild that the 27-year-old was suffering from nightmares. The Independent quoted her stating Lubitz would wake up screaming: “We’re going down!”

Mary, or Maria as she has also been named as, also added: “He did it because he realised that because of his health problems his big dream of a job with Lufthansa; a job as captain and as a long haul pilot was as good as impossible.”

These latest developments come after it was revealed that Lubitz hid his illness from Germanwings, and parent company Lufthansa.

The airline is going through the process of paying compensation to the victims of the tragedy, with Lufthansa getting ready to pay an initial €50,000 in compensation before families face the emotional task of submitting a full claim to the German airline.

On a wider scale, the European Aviation Safety Agency has recommended that there are always two crew members in the cockpit at all times with one being a qualified pilot. EASA Executive Director Patrick Ky said: “While we are still mourning the victims, all our efforts focus on improving the safety and security of passengers and crews”
