Barack Obama on Tuesday used his final UN address as president to hit out at the "crude populism" mushrooming in the United States and around the world.

Making the case for the success of liberal democracies, Obama admitted that a "course correction" was necessary while rejecting "crude populism."

"As these real problems have been neglected, alternative visions of the world have pressed forward," he said.
