Obama hails pope for helping U.S., Cuba find ‘new beginning’

President Barack Obama on Wednesday lauded Pope Francis's role in helping ease animosity between the United States and Cuba , which had endured decades beyond the end of the Cold War.

"We are grateful for your invaluable support of our new beginning with the Cuban people, which holds out the promise of better relations between our countries," Obama said during a public address to mark the pope's arrival at the White House.
