The Associated Press has just learned that the head of Mexico's Sinaloa Cartel was captured overnight by United States and Mexican authorities at a hotel in Mazatlan, Mexico.
An anonymous senior U.S. law enforcement official said Joaquin "El Chapo" Guzman was taken alive overnight. The 56-year-old Guzman was found with an unidentified woman and the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration and the Marshals Service were involved in the capture, according to the official.
Guzman's drug empire runs throughout North America and also reaches Europe and Australia.In the United States, He faces multiple federal drug trafficking indictments and is on the DEA's most-wanted list. He is known as a legendary outlaw and the world's most powerful and elusive drug lord.
Guzman had been pursued for several weeks and his arrest comes following the recent capture of several top Sinaloa operatives and at least 10 mid-level cartel members in the last week.
