Mexican drug kingpin seeks to block US extradition

-

Mexican drug kingpin Joaquin "El Chapo" Guzman sought Monday to legally block any extradition bid by the United States, where authorities want to try him on several charges, a judicial source said.

US prosecutors have yet to issue an extradition request, but Guzman's lawyers filed legal documents on Sunday and Monday aimed at preventing any trial in the United States, the source said on condition of anonymity.

A judge must decide whether to approve Guzman's injunction.

A federal prosecutor's office in New York announced Sunday plans to seek Guzman's extradition. The 56-year-old drug lord, who was captured Saturday, faces drug trafficking charges in several other American cities.

A Mexican judge, meanwhile, has until Tuesday to decide whether to pave the way for a domestic trial against Guzman on drug trafficking and organized crime charges.
