article imageLegal marijuana in Uruguay: Pot users can buy 10 grams each week

By Marcus Hondro     Apr 27, 2014 in World
Uruguay has legalized pot but President Jose Mujica has yet to lay down parameters as to how much one can get. But multiple media sources say the president has made up his mind and each marijuana smoker will be able to buy 10 grams of the drug weekly.
That's about 20 joints worth of marijuana, all to be bought at licenced pharmacies and to bought weekly, with now purchasing an entire month's worth of marijuana at one time. The regulations will be published this coming week.
As to who produces it, that's less clear. Government sources say that up to six producers will be licenced. There's also talk of the marijuana being grown on land controlled by the military in order to prevent illegal trafficking of the drug.
An estimated 20,000 Uruguayans use marijuana daily out of a population of 3.3 million. The government is making pot legal to stop trafficking and Uruguay will be the first South American country to legalize pot. Polls have shown that most Uruguayans do not want it legal; however, polls also show they're interested in seeing how the law will work out.
The laws paving the way for legalization of marijuana were passed in December.
