The Labour Day barbecue organized by the
Edmonton and District Labour Council is an annual event for unemployed and underemployed people. Held in Giovanni Caboto Park in Edmonton's inner city, the barbecue is in its 25th year and in addition to free food features activities for children and live entertainment. The barbecue has been marked by controversy for a couple of years due to its location. The community league of the neighbourhood where the park is located (McCauley) took measures to have the barbecue relocated last year, to the point of booking the park on the Sunday and Monday of the long weekend for another event. The EDLC moved the date of the barbecue to the Saturday. This year, use of the park for the 25th anniversary was negotiated, with its future location in limbo.
McCauley made headlines back in March after the community league was completely replaced at its AGM, in part due to its stand on the barbecue. The new community league has not yet made any decision on its position concerning the barbecue.
Later in the day behind the Stanley Milner Library was the Temporary Foreign Worker Appreciation Day. Organized by the
Temporary Foreign Workers Support Coalition, the event was intended to show TFWs that they are valuable members of the working class and deserve to become permanent residents, rather than merely sent back to their home countries when their work is done. The event featured speakers, entertainment, a barbecue, and lots of information tables from various service organizations serving immigrants and TFWs.
