The death toll from a powerful earthquake that struck a remote area of central Italy climbed to at least 159 late Wednesday, said the head of the country's civil protection agency, Fabrizio Curcio.
Prime Minister Matteo Renzi had earlier given a toll of 120 dead and 368 injured. Rescuers were working through the night to pull survivors from the rubble and "won't slow down", Curcio told public broadcaster Rai.
