article imageIowa passes bill to legalize cannabis treatment for children

Des Moines - Families across Iowa celebrated the news Friday that Governor Terry Branstad signed the bill enabling a low-THC medical marijuana oil extract to be used as treatment for children with severe epilepsy.
"This bill received tremendous support and truly shows the power of people talking to their legislators and to their governor about important issues to them, to their families and to their children," he told the DM Register.
Branstad, along with Republican legislators, opposed many of the previous proposals for the control and use of medical marijuana and related products, according to the DM Register. However, it was through the persistence and support from parents that Branstad signed Senate File 2360 in the Statehouse Rotunda yesterday.
For users, the drug will be legal only in the form of cannabis oil, which contains low doses of THC, the component that causes a "high," KWWL.com reports. Further, the treatment will only be available to those patients who do not respond to medication meant to alleviate seizures; no other medical conditions will be eligible for the cannabis oil, according to KWWL.com.
Senate Majority Leader Mike Gronstal gave credit to the mothers who refused to accept anything but a passing bill, The Gazette reports.
“This was a testament to loving mothers with kids in terrible circumstances and nearly untreatable epilepsy. They became the face of this issue and that’s why this issue passed,” Gronstal told The Gazette. “The truth is Iowa is still a place where ordinary citizens can make an impact on decisions.”
The bill becomes law on July 1 and when it does, Iowa will become the 23rd state to legalize the drug for medical use.
Earlier this month, Florida joined the list of states allowing epileptic children to receive cannabis oil treatments through a specialized, low-THC strain of marijuana called "Charlotte's Web." Colorado and Utah are also supporting states of the cannabis oil treatment for minors with severe cases of epilepsy.
As a medical marijuana state, Michigan may soon be next to pursue the treatment for children, which is slated to go before Senate for consideration later this year.
