article imageGlobal march against the canned hunting of lions Special

By Paula Kirman     Mar 16, 2014 in World
Edmonton - March 15 was designated a global day of action against the canned hunting of lions in South Africa. Marches took place in several cities around the world.
In Edmonton, a small group of animal rights activists marched around the Old Strathcona area and held a rally in Gazebo Park. The group, which was not affiliated with any organized animal rights organization, was protesting the practise of putting lions into a controlled, confined environment where tourists and trophy hunters can easily shoot and kill them. This is referred to as "canned hunting" and the animals are often bred specifically for this purpose. The practise has been going on in South Africa where wealthy tourists can trophy hunt.
