Pioneer - A fireworks supermarket in Tennessee exploded Sunday evening, shooting fireworks onto the nearby highway and causing small brush fires.
The explosion occurred around 4 p.m. at the Fireworks Super Store on Howard Baker Highway in Pioneer, TN. Some 60 firefighters from 14 different departments responded to the scene, battling not only the fire at the store, but subsequent brush fires caused by errant fireworks.
Interstate 75 near exit 141 was shut down temporarily while firefighters brought the fire under control, leaving motorist travelling home from the 4th of July holiday stranded on the interstate for hours. According to WATE TV, a nearly Pilot gas station also had to be shut down due due to thick smoke and exploding shells.
Caryville Fire Department spokesman, Robert Stooksbury, told WVLT:
"When you see something like this and the exploding shells, you know you're going to have to go defensive -- right off the bat and stay back. The main thing is to protect, and once you find everyone is out, you have to protect your responders also."
According to 10TV, there were no reports of injuries.
