President Recep Tayyip Erdogan on Tuesday said Turkey's right to protect its borders must be respected, after the Turkish military shot down a Russian plane on the Syrian border for allegedly violating its airspace.

"Everyone must respect the right of Turkey to protect its borders," Erdogan said at his presidential palace in Ankara, in his first official reaction to the downing of the war plane.
