Chancellor Angela Merkel Sunday hailed the United States as a "friend and essential partner" of Germany, despite occasional "differences of opinion", as she welcomed President Barack Obama to the G7 summit.
"Although it is true we sometimes have differences of opinion, still the US are our friends, our partners and indeed an essential partner with whom we cooperate closely," said Merkel.
