article imageDanish tourist gets hit with €600 fine for dousing ciggy on beach

Alghero - Smokers beware when visiting beautiful Sardinia in Italy. A Danish tourist at the beach recently stubbed out her cigarette in the sand and got hit with a €600 fine for her bad habit.
It seems authorities in Italy are getting really serious about littering on the beach and are doing their utmost to preserve that pristine coastline down in Alghero, north-western Sardinia. And one Danish tourist found out the hard way as she was caught red-handed, stubbing out her cigarette in the sand. €600 (or $795) is a lot of money to pay for a quick smoke.
Apparently when the Danish woman was literally caught in the act, she did try to explain to the officer that she was merely putting the cigarette out and would throw the cigarette butt away properly later, but the cop was having none of it. She did admit to the crime, however, and apologized, but had to cough up the fine.
With the month of August being a popular time of year in the Italian resort, authorities decided to increase their vigilance at the beaches to ensure cleanliness was preserved and other holidaymakers are also facing penalties for littering.
Among the many pollutants found on beaches, cigarette butts are considered one of the worst, as the filters can take around 200 years to fully decompose, reports Rai News. That is a long time for a butt to hang around in the environment indeed.
According to The Local, this woman was relatively lucky with the amount of the fine paid, as another Danish tourist recently decided to take a spur-of-the-moment taxi all the way from Odense in Denmark to Rome, which knocked him back 30,000 kroner ($5,250).
Apparently the taxi driver at first thought the guy wanted to go to the airport, but no, he was serious. The trip apparently took three days through Germany and Austria to get to Italy.
Martin Langstred, the taxi driver, said, “There was this church that he wanted to see in Rome. It was a dream of his.”
Now the man is probably the butt of several jokes online.
