article imageCommunity events show brighter side to rougher neighbourhoods Special

Edmonton - Two separate events on the same day in two different Edmonton neighbourhoods had one thing in common: they showed a brighter side to what are considered rougher areas of the city.
YEG Market was a one day street market held in a back alley along Stony Plain Road, a strip peppered with pawn shops, thrift stores, and adult entertainment venues. Organized by the Stony Plain Road Business Association, the event featured many vendors selling everything from jewelry to clothing to crafts to cosmetics, as well as entertainment, buskers, children's activities, and food trucks. The Stony Plain Road has been undergoing a facelift over the past through years due to City revitalization efforts, and YEG Market was a chance to show off improvements and bring people from all over the city to the area to help shed its rough image.

Meanwhile, over in the north east part of the city, the annual Viva Italia, Viva Edmonton celebration was held in the Little Italy section of the McCauley neighbourhood. VIVE (as it is known) is part of the East meets West series of cultural festivals in the area, which is ethnically diverse. Part of 95 Street was shut down to accommodate food trucks as well as a classic car and scooter display, and Giovanni Caboto Park was host to children's activities, a soccer match, a wine tasting tent, cooking demonstrations, and an entertainment stage with music, dancing, a pizza eating contest, and more. McCauley is a neighbourhood with a high crime rate and is home to many of the city's social service agencies, but has been undergoing City of Edmonton revitalization efforts for the past few years in an effort to attract new families and businesses to the area.
