Britain's Ministry of Defence has launched an investigation after a Royal Marine trainee collapsed and died during a 30-mile march in southwest England.
The soldier, whose name has been withheld at the request of his family, was based at the Commando Training Centre at Lympstone, Devon.
An MoD spokesman said the cause of death was unknown.
"This incident is being investigated and the thoughts and sympathies of the Naval Service are with the family and friends of this man," he said.
The man died on Thursday during the so-called "30-miler" march across upland Dartmoor, the last major test undertaken as part of the 32-week commando course.
Trainees are instructed to navigate the route themselves and complete it within eight hours while carrying additional safety equipment.
In July 2013 three army reservists died after collapsing during an SAS training exercise in the Brecon Beacons in Wales.
An inquest into the deaths of Lance Corporal Edward Maher, Lance Corporal Craig Roberts and Corporal James Dunsby was due to begin Monday.
