Inca - A father was walking along the road between Sencelles to Costitx on the island of Mallorca in Spain's Balearic Islands, carrying his three-month-old baby in his arms. A passing van hit the baby with its wing mirror, mortally wounding the child.
It was one of those tragic accidents that happens in a second. One minute the father and his baby were strolling along the roadside between Sencelles and Costitx on the island of Mallorca, the next the wing mirror of the van grazed the baby as it passed, striking the child on the head. There is reportedly no verge on the part of the road where the incident occurred.

The driver of the van, completely unaware of the severity of the incident, continued on down the road, while the father rushed the baby immediately to the emergency room at the local Son Espases hospital.
Despite emergency surgery to attempt to stabilize the injured child, the baby did not survive. The boy's father, who is a qualified pediatrician at the hospital, was not injured in the incident.
According to the local newspaper, Crónica Balear, when the 42-year-old driver of the van, who lives locally, heard of the incident and the time and place it occurred, he immediately handed himself in to the Civil Guard in Inca. He told police that he was completely unaware of what had actually happened. After police officers took his confession, the man was charged with involuntary manslaughter and released.
According to the local media, after the father testified in the Magistrate's Court of Inca about the incident, a friend said that both he and the mother of the baby "are wrecked." The incident has caused much upset in Costitx and the City Council has decreed three days of mourning.
It is unknown whether the family will take legal action against the van driver.
