ABC news is reporting that Homeland Security Secretary Jeh Johnson said in a statement Monday that Melvin Carraway, who has only been in the position since January, was being moved to the Office of State and Local Law Enforcement at DHS headquarters “effective immediately.”
In his statement, Johnson said, “I thank Melvin Carraway for his eleven years of service to TSA and his 36 years of public service,” adding that Acting Deputy Director Mark Hatfield is now in Charge of the TSA until President Obama’s nomination of Coast Guard Vice-Adm. Peter Neffenger is confirmed as the TSA’s next administrator.
The Department of Homeland Security has also ordered the Transportation Security Administration to revise its security procedures after the dismal and very embarrassing failures seen in the undercover operation that tested security procedures at airports across the country.
As reported in Digital Journal on Monday, the DHS’s Red Team, posing as airline travelers were able to get past security screening procedures at numerous airports across the country 67 out of 70 times with weapons and fake explosives.
Mr. Johnson did say that although the failure numbers in the report “never look good out of context,” swift and broad measures were needed to overhaul the system, especially addressing “specific vulnerabilities.” Johnson has also asked the Senate to confirm Admiral Neffenger’s nomination “as quickly possible.”
