article imageA low-key Western Canadian Halloween Special

By Paula Kirman     Oct 29, 2014 in World
Edmonton - While some houses get totally in the spirit of Halloween, many of the houses in my neighbourhood keep things rather low key.
In the days of my youth, I remember vividly decorated houses with jack-o-lanterns, skeletons, fake spiders, and the like. There was even a specific area called Halloween Alley, where one could take in some very incredible Halloween displays.
Today, some houses still go all out for Halloween, but many more are quite minimalist in their approach. Why the shift? For one, it appears that fewer children go trick or treating in residential areas. Fears of safety and not knowing your neighbours well perhaps contribute to this. Many children instead go to one of the city's malls to trick or treat from store to store.

One neighbour of mine told me that last year her house only received two visitors - a disappointment from the dozens of children in the past. Personally, I would be stoked to end up having to eat all that candy on my own; however, I can understand the disappointment for those who enjoy Halloween to have their efforts go unnoticed.
Late October in Edmonton can be a mixed bag as far as weather goes. It can be knee deep in snow, it can be sunny and warm, or it can be a cross between the two. In most cases, many leaves have fallen on the ground, making orange jack-o-lantern bags like the ones incorporated into the display pictured below an easy, inexpensive way to decorate one's front yard. It helps take care of the autumn clean up at the same time. How practical!

Several area houses use basic department store decorations, like cotton spider's web fluff and stylistic tombstones. I found a few houses that took things one step further to create a sufficiently creepy effect.
