The injured were all from South Iredale High School in Statesville, N.C. attending a yearly band competition at North Iredale, Iredell-Statesville Schools Superintendent Brady Johnson told the Charlotte-Observer.
According to officials, 25 people, including one adult were taken to area hospitals. The names of the injured have not been released, reports WBTV, a news partner of the Charlotte-Observer.
Apparently, a Ryder truck struck a beam supporting an overhang at the front entrance to the school, causing several people to be trapped underneath the concrete rubble. Rescue units had to free the injured, said Johnson. It is not known at this time if the weather was a factor in the accident.
Johnson said the accident happened at 2:15 p.m. local time as students were walking into the front entrance. A Ryder truck pulled up to the front entrance and struck the beam, causing the roof to collapse.
Iredell County Medical Director Howard Mell said one of the injured students was taken to the trauma center at Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center in Winston-Salem while the remainder of the injured were taken to local hospitals
The yearly band competition was supposed to have 16 schools competing, but due to the bad weather, eight schools canceled. Only groups from North Iredell, South Iredell, Statesville and Lake Norman high schools were on the campus when the accident occurred.
North Iredale High School is located in Olin, North Carolina, about 50 miles north of Charlotte.
